College: City College of New York (transferred from Queensborough Community College)
Although I was born in the United States, I spent the majority of my childhood in Lagos, Nigeria – one of the most populous cities in the world. Growing up in a third-world country was an eye-opening experience. Being surrounded by constant news of government and private corruption, power outages, abject poverty and disregard for human suffering caused me to begin to question the responsibilities of a government and the ways through which policies are enacted. The political anarchy and tyranny that I witnessed growing up in Nigeria sparked my interest in politics and service to my community. Amidst several challenges including a speech impediment, I am thankful for a very supportive family and group of friends, from whom I continue to draw inspiration. They encourage and support me in all of my endeavors.
In July of 2012, I graduated as student body president from Queensborough Community College of the City University of New York with an associate's degree in Liberal Arts. I now attend the City College of New York, where I’m majoring in Political Science. After the completion of my bachelor’s degree, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in International Relations and a PhD in Social Policy.
Ultimately, I aspire to work with the United Nations and contribute to their efforts of combating genocide, promoting sustainability, fostering international peace and facilitating economic growth. Before then however, I would embrace the opportunity to work in public administration and serve my community, potentially through running for political office.
Beyond developing professional and social skills, New York Needs You provides the rare advantage of connecting Fellows like me to great opportunities ranging from internships to scholarships, and introductions to individuals from a plethora of vibrant industries. In today’s increasingly intricate society that proves overwhelming sometimes, it is refreshing to be amongst a community of intellectuals who truly care and are willing to invest their time and effort to my future.
