I was born and raised in China. Three years ago, I arrived in America with my family to pursue my American dream. I was afraid but also excited. My parents both didn’t have the opportunity to attend school and as I witnessed their struggles growing up, I didn’t really know what my future would look like. But I did know that getting a college education would truly change my life.
Being a first-generation college student and an ESL student has its challenges. At times I have even questioned whether I should stay in college or not. However, I have worked to address my language barriers, stay positive and never give up. My passion is the government field. I was inspired when I took an American Government class, and I hope to make our society better by being involved in policy making.
ANY offers me the opportunity to access my career field. It seems made just for me—an ambitious, motivated, first general college student. As an ANY fellow, I don’t want just to prove myself, but also to encourage people who have similar situations that college education is attainable. I want to be a role model to encourage young immigrants, telling them that regardless of the challenges I have received, I can do as well as other people.
