I come from a very close-knit family of Dominican descent. My mother is my biggest role model because she has worked very hard to raise me and provide me with everything I need. Through every obstacle, she has taught me how to be determined and persistent. She has always instilled in me that education is the key; therefore, I am working hard to make sure I complete my education to better our future.
I am a student at City College of New York majoring in psychology with a concentration in pre-med. My goal is to become a doctor and I am seriously considering oncology. I have been considering this specialty because my cousin has been battling leukemia and I’ve observed the relationship the oncologists formed with him and their persistence in fighting the battle. I have also worked at a doctor’s office and in a hospital in my neighborhood. In addition, I participated in the Summer Medical and Dental Educational Program at Columbia University, which has fueled my motivation to pursue a career in the medical field. Ultimately, I hope that my medical training and educational success can inspire and help a lot of people in my community of Washington Heights by treating and educating them.
Being selected by New York Needs You has been a great encouragement because for the first time I could share my goals with different professionals who truly believe I have the potential to reach them and will always give me sincere feedback. Participating as a New York Needs You Fellow provides the professional development and skills I need to successfully apply and be admitted to medical school. Also, the program has given me the opportunity to be part of a family of peers whose self-determination and motivation is truly inspiring.
