Coming from a West Indian family, there has always been a big emphasis on education. As such, I am determined to finish college and make my family proud. I am currently a Human Services and Social Work student at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. As a student I have excelled in my classes, with a 3.7 GPA, and a position on the Deans List for the past three Semesters. I have also received The Borough of Manhattan Community College Foundation Scholarship for the past two semesters. After I graduate this semester I will be continuing my education at a senior college. I will transfer as a Social Work Major to York College in the Spring 2014.
Aside from school I have already had experience in the Social Work field. As a former recipient of social services, my plan is to return the gifts I received back to the profession. I plan to do this by reaching out to at-risk youth in impoverished communities. I have already started put this goal into action. I am currently working with the agency where I previously received services, The Child Center of New York. I am a sexual health educator with the Teen Action After School Program. I was also featured in an agency video as a most improved client, and have been a motivational speaker on behalf of the agency. While I feel that I have already accomplished so much, I am ready to conquer even more, and with the help of New York Needs You I feel that I will be more than prepared to reach my goals.
