LaShawnda Brooks (Program Coordinator)

LaShawnda Brooks is Program Coordinator at New York Needs You.

Prior to joining New York Needs You, LaShawnda worked for Teach for America as a social studies teacher. As a teacher in Atlanta, GA LaShawnda became passionate about eradicating the achievement gap and using education to make transformative change.

LaShawnda received her B.A. in Politics and African and African American Studies from the University of Virginia in 2009. At the University, LaShawnda worked in various campus communities and held a number of leadership positions. LaShawnda studied abroad in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil focusing on contemporary race comparisons between Brazil and the United States. In 2008, she was selected to be a New Young Leader by the Center for Progressive Leadership in Washington D.C. In addition to understanding the capacity of progressive movements, she obtained an internship with GenderPAC, an organization for gender advocacy and equality.
