John H. Schaefer
John Schaefer retired from Morgan Stanley in 2006. Mr. Schaefer was a member of Morgan Stanley’s Management Committee (1998-2005) and was President and Chief Operating Officer of Morgan Stanley’s Global Wealth Management Group (2000-2005). GWM provides comprehensive financial services to individual investors and had annual revenues of $ 6 billion.
Prior to that, Mr. Schaefer was Executive Vice President and Chief Strategic and Administrative Officer of Morgan Stanley (1998-2000). In that position, he was responsible for Strategic Planning, Capital Management, E-commerce, Internal Audit, Human Resources, Corporate Communications, Corporate Services and Facilities, Aviation and Security. Mr. Schaefer controlled a direct budget of $400 million and spending of $1 billion, and managed 4000 employees.
From 1997 to 1998, Mr. Schaefer was Managing Director and head of Strategic Planning and Capital Management at Morgan Stanley.
During his tenure at Morgan Stanley, Mr. Schaefer was a member of the Board of the Securities Industry Association (1999-2004) and its Chairman in 2003. He was also a member of the Morgan Stanley Foundation from 2004 to 2006.
Prior to the 1997 merger of Dean Witter, Discover and Morgan Stanley, Mr. Schaefer was Executive Vice President Investment Banking and Head of Corporate Finance of Dean Witter, a position he held since 1991. Mr. Schaefer joined Dean Witter in 1988 and was a member of the Dean Witter, Discover Senior Management Group from 1991 to 1997.
Mr. Schaefer began his investment banking career at E.F. Hutton & Company in 1976 and ultimately headed its National Industrial Banking Group.
Mr. Schaefer is a member of the Board of USI Holdings, a portfolio company of Goldman Sachs Capital Partners. He is a Trustee and member of the Executive Committee of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Mr. Schaefer is the Vice President, a Director, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation, a Massachusetts land trust. He is actively involved in various Board and advisory capacities at the University of Notre Dame including the Mendoza College of Business and the Alliance for Catholic Education.
Mr. Schaefer received a B.B.A. in Accounting from the University of Notre Dame in 1974 and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1976.
