Jennifer Swayne
Jennifer Swayne works for the non-profit civil rights law firm New York Lawyers for the Public Interest as a Health Justice Staff Attorney. In this position Jennifer strives to ensure that communities of color and immigrant communities have access to health care by working with community based organizations and others to dismantle the institutional barriers in the health care setting. Previously, Jennifer was a Litigation Associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, where she represented clients in a variety of industries at various phases of judicial proceedings. Jennifer additionally has extensive pro bono experience and has represented clients in matters involving applications for tax-exempt status, petitions for asylum, and educational access and reform initiatives. Jennifer's affiliation with NYNY actually began through pro bono work at Skadden, where she assisted NYNY with grant applications and research regarding first-generation students.
Jennifer, a native of Oakland, California, was a first-generation student and received a J.D. from New York University School of Law. As a student, Jennifer was a member of the Black, Allied, Law Students Association (BALSA), and created initiatives to increase outreach and matriculation of Black students at NYU Law. Jennifer also has extensive experience mentoring and tutoring students of all ages and grade levels. In addition to membership on the YLB, Jennifer serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of La Cima Elementary Charter School, located in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn. Jennifer received a BA in Psychology from the University of Michigan and is an avid Michigan Football fan.
