NEW YORK NEEDS YOU!
NYNY, NEW YORK CITY’S ONLY NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION FOCUSING ON THE UPWARD MOBILITY OF FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS, HOSTS ITS INAUGURAL BENEFIT AND SILENT AUCTION
New York, NY – September 9th, 2010 New York Needs You, NYNY, a non-profit organization with the distinctive, promising, and vital vision to champion high-potential first-generation college students by providing them with the most intensive career mentorship program in New York City, is hosting its inaugural benefit and silent auction on Wednesday, September 15th at Cipriani 42nd Street. The benefit will raise money and awareness for NYNY’s Fellowship Program, which fosters the individual and collective success of this next generation and, will ultimately enrich the social fabric of our city, country, and world.
NYNY’s board of directors is composed of a vast range of leaders across a wide spectrum of industries, including corporate, financial, legal, non-profit, and entertainment. Hundreds of New York’s most prominent and philanthropic individuals have already confirmed their attendance in an effort to raise funds for the ONLY non-profit organization in New York City that focuses exclusively on first-generation college students. This year, NYNY will be honoring Howard Marks, founder and chairman of Oaktree Capital Management, and Cory A. Booker, Mayor of the City of Newark, New Jersey, for their support and commitment towards NYNY’s crucial mission.
Staggering statistics illustrate that only 11% of first-generation college students graduate from college (with drop-out rates 5 times higher than their peers) and after graduation, they earn 10% less and have lower rates of graduate school matriculation than other graduates. Robert Reffkin, President and Founder of NYNY, was shocked when he read these statistics. “It is unfair that some of our hardest working, most dedicated students can’t realize their potential, because they don’t have basic guidance and support.” This motivated him to galvanize the vast New York City resources to launch this organization, which leverages 200 highly accomplished professionals that volunteer over 10,000 hours of mentorship, so that our youth receives the comprehensive support necessary to realize their professional goals.
“We are eagerly anticipating our first benefit for New York Needs You,” stated NYNY’s Executive Director Nicole Lindsay.“The possibilities for first-generation college students are endless, when given the necessary guidance from our invaluable mentors. We feel fortunate to have so many remarkable individuals joining us on September 15th, to support NYNY’s fundamental mission.”
