I am a Chinese-born American in the foster care system where I have endured significant emotional trauma. My experiences have allowed me to look through a unique lens and develop a work ethic that pushed me to graduate high school in three years and jump straight to LaGuardia Community College. Here, I am pursuing a Liberal Arts Math and Science degree. I also work with two non-profit organizations that take a hands-on approach to improve the foster care system.
Through these organizations, I became a Mentor to other children in foster care. I have gained confidence and acknowledged my ability to make a difference in the lives of others as a result of this experience. Looking forward, I hope to make a career in which I can use my skills and experience while pursuing both personal and professional growth.
The NYNY Fellowship Program has enabled my understanding of the Benjamin Disraeli quote, “Circumstances are beyond human control, but our conduct is our own power.” I am currently on the path to develop my professional goals that will shape my future, and NYNY helps me by expanding my knowledge about careers. In addition, NYNY allows me to learn from my failures and grow.
