Born and raised in an ethnically diverse Georgetown, Guyana I was exposed to a variety of cultures and I developed appreciation for different customs. Growing up my parents never had the opportunities that I had. They instilled in me positive values: discipline and responsibility which have made me the driven individual that I am today. At the age of eighteen I immigrated to the United States with my family and embarked on a journey to succeed, give back and most of all to grow. But, no matter where I am as long as I have my family and I’m surrounded by people whom I hold dear to me, that is my home.
I recently earned my Associate’s Degree in Business Administration at Medgar Evers College, CUNY and I will be continuing my studies in Marketing and Writing at Baruch College. I decided to attend Baruch College because I wanted to challenge myself, to experience new awkwardness and grow, to break out of my comfort zone. Also, to learn more about the industry since Baruch is a specialized business school. My favorite course is marketing because it incorporates research, creativity, analysis, management and team interaction. I take pleasure in experiencing new things and traveling. Although I am from the modern era with technology fast advancing, I still enjoy popular music from the classical era and 70’s fashion. I also like swimming and discovering the beauty of nature through nature walks in the park. My biggest accomplishment was being awarded the New York City female regional scholarship for the NBA Bacardi Gold Standard Scholarship Program in the Thurgood Marshall College Fund category. I am also proud and grateful to be a New York Needs You fellow and a summer intern at DDB, an Omnicom Group company. On my journey I have learned to accept my mistakes as life lessons and to learn from them.
I am aspiring to be a professional in the field of marketing for both the profit and non-profit sectors. I plan to further my education by getting an MBA which will provide me with the advanced knowledge and thinking skills needed to initiate and manage programs. I want to implement programs that provide fine arts lessons for economically challenged children because I believe that the arts can provide a medium for them to express themselves and help develop a creative talent. Through my participation in the New York Needs You Fellowship Program I hope to develop my strengths. I hope that NYNY will help me refine my career choice. I am looking forward to interacting with the mentor coaches because I serve as a mentor to middle school children and through mentor coach relationships. I hope to learn a few tips about mentoring which I will be able utilize so that I can have an effective and positive influence on the lives of others.
