College: Medgar Evers College
Robin
Before I came into the world, my mother had no clue how to raise a child on her own. My mother was young when she had me, a senior in high school. When she finished her years of high school, my mother bounced around living in a shelter and the nursing home for teenage mothers. Even though my mother was not prepared for me, she worked very hard to provide for my sister and me. I get inspired by her struggle and use that as my motivation.
Going to school was the toughest thing that I have went through, because I struggle with a learning disability. In elementary school and middle school, I had classes that were a mixture of special education and regular education. Transitioning to high school was difficult but I was able to build a great support network. My teachers encouraged me to come out of my shell. At home, my mother was my cheerleader. I received certificates for being on the honors’ list, and certificates for achieving good grades. When it was time for me to look for a college, I didn’t think it was possible for me to go because of my low SAT score. However, the support team did not give up and I did not give up. Currently, I attend college with a full scholarship from FFAWN. I’m proud of myself; in fact, I thank God for putting supportive people in my life. It feels good to get up and know I’m making a difference in my own life.
I am studying biology at Medgar Evers College. My career goal is to become a dentist - but not just any dentist, I want to make an impact on people's lives. As an NYNY Fellow, I hope to gain hands on experience with passionate people who will guide me through opportunities, the ability to build on what I’m learning in college and then take it to another level which will help me with intense discipline training and work readiness.
