Never give up, never give in, always give back, and never forget where you came from. This is what I learned from my low-income, Korean-immigrant family, and as the youngest of four, giving up was never an option. I never even considered it. My parents came to an unfamiliar land for their children’s sake, and I have always been prepared to make as many sacrifices as they made for me.
Despite my shortcomings, I give what I can to those less fortunate than me: my time and effort. I have volunteered at nursing homes, soup kitchens and other events such as AIDS walks, and I have found that my humble background makes my experiences that much more meaningful. I put my heart and soul into helping others. After graduating, when I am able, I will give back in more ways than ever before.
I realize the limitations of time and effort, as these elements, although essential, often fail to make a substantial impact without financial support. I recognize that I can make a much larger impact on the less fortunate if I pursue my personal goal of becoming a CEO. I look to NYNY as an opportunity to help me become a person with the means to further aid others.
As an NYNY Fellow, I am not only able to work with people who share my interests, I am surrounded by the company of people who support my goal of creating positive change. NYNY has helped me realize that being a first-generation college student does not mean my goals are out of reach. In fact, with their help, they are only an arms’ length away.
