Born in Queens, NY and raised in Punjab, India, I saw and experienced what living on opposite ends of the world was like. The different cultures - modern and traditional, Eastern and Western - shaped my values and who I am today. My peers in India craved great education, understanding it to be their chance to overcome their families’ financial hardships. The outdated school system and facilities, however, hindered their road to success. On the other side of the world in New York, I became frustrated with my classmates who did not take advantage of the many educational opportunities and resources offered to them. The combination of my experiences in India and New York have motivated me to work hard and have taught me the importance of participating in the activities and programs available to me that once were not.
I am presently an intern in the Finance Department at Versace USA. After graduation, I aspire to launch my career at a Big Four accounting firm. My love of travel will likely lead me to work in another city or country for some time. Ultimately, I would prefer to shift to the non-profit sector. Active participation in community service has taught me the importance of giving back. I hope to start an organization concerned with the needs of children in India, especially education. In addition to reconnecting with my roots, this would allow me to work with students who desire success but do not have access to the necessary resources.
NYNY, with its networking power, will be key in achieving my professional goals. Circumstances do not often arise in which 50 plus well-accomplished men and women gather within a single room to share their wisdom with young adults who dream of such success. At each workshop we are taught skills to build our professional profile, but I walk away every time with a new life lesson and renewed inspiration.
