Nazary
My name is Nazary and I immigrated to America when I was 6 years old. My parents left Ukraine shortly after having me, so I lived the first 6 years with my grandparents in Ozerna, a small village near the city of Ternopil, where I was born. My parents wanted a better life for themselves and their children and decided to leave, at the time crumbling, Soviet Union for America. They settled in Brooklyn and had a friend fly me over when they had enough saved up to take care of me. I grew up in Brooklyn and attended public school throughout my life, eventually graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School.
I currently attend Pace University where I’m pursuing a bachelor’s in Bio-Chemistry. Pace was my safety school and originally I was a little upset that I was going to be attending it. I felt that all my hard work in high school hadn’t been recognized. I quickly realized, however, that you may not always get what you want, but you get what you need. Pace is an excellent school with a very stimulating academic program. I definitely feel I’m on the right path as every Chemistry lecture has held my interest and Chemistry Lab has always introduced a new phenomenon. I can’t wait to learn more about the subject in my future studies, and in turn use that knowledge to analyze the world around me and understand it even better.
My goals for the future are to finish my bachelor’s degree in 3 years and enroll in an MD/PhD program. I want to pursue a Medical Degree in epidemiology and a PhD in Bio-Chemistry, this combination of degrees will allow me to be a “research doctor” – someone who is adapt at both diagnosing patients and treating them, as well as synthesizing new ideas for cures. This combination will allow me to best explore my interests in both science and medicine. I hope that the New York Needs You program gives me a professional advantage once I finish school and begin my career.
