I was born in New York but consider myself Bengali. My parents are from Bangladesh and I have adopted my culture from them even though I visited Bangladesh only once. I am the youngest of four children and the only son. Because of my culture and the fact that I am the only male child, not only do I need to be successful and provide for myself, but I must also support my parents in the future. This traditional system is only part of the reason why I strive to succeed. The real factor behind my ambition are my parents. Watching my parents struggle to live a life they desire motivates me to be my best. I may not be the most talented or most gifted person, but I have the capacity and desire to learn. I may never be perfect, but my aspiration will help me get closer to perfection.
I am currently attending Baruch College and I plan on majoring in Actuarial Science. I am not 100% sure about what I want to do, but it is in a world where mathematics, business, finance, and economics intertwine. My passion for applying mathematics into real life scenarios began in 2010 during my senior year of high school. I participated in the Moody's Mega Math Challenge by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. This is an annual competition where high school teams of 5 compete with other teams nationwide trying to produce an analysis and a model using all the mathematics knowledge they have within 14 hours. In that year, the main question was how should the government apportion their members of congress appropriately due to the census. At first this challenge seemed impossible and it completely made me frustrated because it was ambiguous. For the first time I had to use math at a higher level. The math that I have always done had a definite answer. This challenge did not have an answer, instead it had to have an explanation. The challenge made me discover my ability as an analytical person.
In the future, my greatest goal is to be successful. Success can be explained in many ways, but the way I define it is by making a decent living doing what I enjoy. I want to work in the finance industry because it is constantly changing. Here I can obtain a respectable living while keeping up with important current events and applying it to my work. I feel that I will be able to expand to leadership positions as well in this field . At NYNY, I hope to gain access to opportunities. Nowadays, it is hard to find work alone but through networks it is much more attainable. I believe that NYNY will provide me with the resources and support I need to succeed.
