Michelle
My parents are first-generation immigrants from China, and watching their struggle in America has significantly impacted my aspirations and goals. Aside from working at his store every day, my father had to work many different side jobs to make enough money to support our family. Coming from a poor family in China, he never had the opportunity to attend college, and now he works for his family - for me - to have better opportunities. My father has inspired me to work hard, to attend a prestigious college, and to always persevere through any obstacle that comes my way.
I know I do not want to see my parents behind on their bills, or working on weekends and holidays anymore. I firmly believe that education is the key to change, and that is why I capitalize on every opportunity. During high school, I learned a great deal about time management by excelling in my scholastic endeavors, handling two jobs and holding leadership positions in extracurricular activities. Although these responsibilities were overwhelming at times, I never faltered because my father was, and always will be, my inspiration. Throughout my life, I have been fortunate enough to have mentors who have guided and supported me. Having learned the importance of mentorship, I aspire to become a mentor in the future. Having also been exposed to various social problems related to poverty, I want to pursue a law degree so that I can be in a position to implement change and help poverty-stricken families and communities.
New York Needs You has exposed me to many careers in different fields, and has provided me with a network of supportive professionals. Seeing all of the possibilities and opportunities has expanded my horizons, and is pushing me to reach my fullest potential. It was through this program that I was inspired to pursue a law degree.
