Ka Yuk
I was born in Hong Kong and moved to the U.S. when I was seven years old. It was very hard for my parents to find jobs because they do not speak English, and they struggled to support our family financially. When my parents asked me whether or not I wanted to stay in America, their sacrifice to be here inspired me to make the decision to stay and work hard in school. I worked twice as hard as my fellow classmates, and when I continued to struggle academically I pushed myself to keep working and support my family. I was the leader of my house, and was responsible for all translation and house related issues.
Because of my family’s struggle to live in America, I try to take advantage of every opportunity in order to make my dreams come true. Through high school and many extracurricular activities, I discovered my love for science and medicine. Acknowledging my family’s need for help when we first arrived in America, I realized that there are others who are also in need. Thus, I like to volunteer and lend a hand in my community. Combining my interest in medicine and my passion for helping others, I hope to attend medical school and become a doctor.
I am honored to be an NYNY Fellow. Acceptance to the program shows my potential to be a great leader in my community. I am able to get advice from a variety of professionals, and can practice presentation, speaking, and networking skills that are important for becoming a doctor. I am also able to give back to the community by participating in community service projects and serving as a minor’s mentor.
