When I was young, I was always puzzled by my father’s strange affinity towards planes. Instead of the usual weekend trips to the beach or the park, my father often opted for a family trip to the nearby international airport, where we spent the majority of our time sitting behind a huge glass wall inside the departure terminal, quietly gazing at the slow ascend of departing planes. I was too young to understand that the my father didn't just like planes, but what they symbolize. To him, departing planes symbolized an opportunity for the family to start anew, and more importantly, his hope for my brother and me to have a better shot in life. Sixteen years later, I found myself climbing into the very plane my father dreamed of and slowly ascended toward his wish. I haven’t landed since; because right now I am determined to pilot the plane towards an even greater height.
I will not stop until I can achieve my long-term professional goal of becoming a developmental economist with either the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund. I can be in a position to use my skills and experiences to help those people who are not as fortunate as I am to achieve their greatest dream and potential. Opportunity is a very precious and fleeting commodity, and NYNY has provided me with all the tools I need to fully capture it. I am very thankful for NYNY for giving me such an amazing platform to both learn and develop.
