My parents immigrated to the United States from St. Lucia. It may sound cliché, but it was to provide us with a better life. They encountered many difficulties but never gave up because they had a goal. This was to provide me with more opportunities for success. I am a product of my parents’ hard work, and as the first child to enter college, I am determined to succeed. This is the only way I can give back all that my parents invested in me. Realizing how extremely hard they worked because of their lack of education demonstrated to me the importance of higher education.
I firmly believe in hard work, but I also believe in working smart. A college degree will provide me with a career instead of merely a job. I would love to work for a Fortune 500 company like Google, Microsoft, or Apple and later have my own business. I want to work at a company like one of these because they are the best at what they do, and I want to work for the best. In addition to this, I want to give back to my community. I do not know in what capacity yet, but in time I know it will come to me.
The NYNY Program has a vast amount of resources that I plan to utilize. What I have learned thus far sets me ahead by miles. NYNY provides me with skills to refine my natural talents. It also offers me a glimpse of what to expect in the workforce. Most importantly, I have become open minded as a result of the program. Simply because I have obtained a degree in Computer Information Systems does not mean that I am destined to work in the computer field. I will be dynamic and grab opportunities when they are presented.
