I was the first of five children. After my elementary school, I was raised by my grandparents in a small town in Ghana. I then moved to stay with my uncle in the city of Accra where I completed middle school. Joining my mother, I immigrated to the United States in 2008 with wide eyes. I followed in her footsteps, enrolling in Bronx Community College in pursuit of a degree in nursing as she had when she came to the U.S.
I believe health is the best gift you can give anybody, so I aspire to educate people on how they can prevent sickness and disease. I would also like to be involved in the politics of Ghana after retiring from an active healthcare career so that I can represent my region in government. My educational and professional aspirations come from the community in which I grew up. A limited mindset exists among children in my hometown. Most of them only aspire to finish middle school. I want to create the change I dream of by going back home one day and helping children find and develop their own talents. I grew up seeing other children die of preventable and hearing the elderly be called witches because of their ill health. These are the reasons I want to establish a career in healthcare.
NYNY encourages me to be confident in my capabilities by enlightening me on how to best present myself and ideas to others, how to establish and maintain relationships, and how to identify an opportunity, use it to my advantage, and help others find their opportunities as well. I know this is possible because NYNY has shown me that there is nothing holding me back but myself. I come from Ghana, and through NYNY I experience the American Dream with its endless opportunities.
