Fatoumata
As a first-generation Gambian-American, I was born and raised in a section of the Bronx colored with violence, drugs and poverty. My parents immigrated to America during the 1980s from The Gambia, West Africa with a few luggage bags, longings for the African sun, and dreams of their children pursuing the American Dream. I was raised, however, in a neighborhood in which education was not valued and opportunities were limited. Although my external environment was chaotic, I was cared for in a humble and faithful Islamic household of six.
My first glimpse into what I would become came during high school when I traveled with a non-profit organization to Sokela, Mali for a construction project. In Sokela, I witnessed indescribable poverty and people with all the potential in the world but who were restricted by a severe lack of resources. In helping these individuals, I was empowered. I realized that it was my duty as a global citizen to help communities like Sokela combat poor living conditions. I was inspired to dedicate my life to being an agent of change and social equity.
I desire to become an International Diplomat in the United Nations and an active player in international volunteerism. I strive to be engaged in areas of public service that eliminate human rights violations and improve the health of our global community. I have an avid interest in addressing domestic issues as well. Because of the conditions I experienced in the Bronx and my frustration at being one of the few inner-city students in my NYU classrooms, I aspire to create a non-profit organization that targets low-income youths and immigrant communities. I will provide such individuals with the resources they need to eliminate the injustices that inhibit their opportunities.
I once believed that being a first-generation college student from the inner city and an African-American female would block me from success, but NYNY has shown me that by realizing my inner potential, my dream of becoming an International Diplomat will one day be reality. Through NYNY, I am provided with the support, foundation, and skills I need for my quest in becoming a leader of my inner city and global community. I hope to, in return, provide NYNY with enthusiasm and positive energy with all my responsibilities.
