I was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and moved to the United States when I was four years old. My parents left all that they knew behind in order to start a new life in the U.S. to provide a brighter future for their children. Being an immigrant family has its own obstacles. We had to learn a new language, understand new customs, and even face limited opportunities. Yet, my parents never uttered a complaint, they continued to work hard, and endured the challenges because their ambitions for the future of their children were all that mattered. As I grew up I realized their struggles, and being their oldest child I knew that it was up to me to pave a road for my sibling in order for them to walk on. Consequently, I realized that I had to try my best to succeed and not to take the opportunities I have, such as an education, for granted.
I am currently a sophomore at City College of New York and I am majoring in International Studies and Psychology. Thus far I am extremely interested in Modern Psychology and Global Perspectives. Modern Psychology allows me to understand the manner in which humans think and approach situations. In Global Perspectives, I learn the history and political strives of other countries and how their history has defined their individual/international identities today.
Through my coursework, I’ve realized my own passions. I want to learn about developing countries and how the living conditions of the citizens of those countries are affected. One of my greatest accomplishments is becoming a member of Model United Nations. The most severe issues around the world heavily impact people who are minorities and those with lower economic status. Model U.N. has given me a greater awareness of the world around me, and has strengthened my desire to achieve my goals to work at the United Nations. I am willing to succeed, give back to the world would like to create change for people in developing nations.
