I was born in Tirana, Albania. At that time, the Communist regime had collapsed and the country entered a period of economic turmoil and rebellion. Since the borders were open for the first time in 40 years, my family was able to flee to Germany. As a young child, I thought it was exciting to live in another country and I adapted very easily. Then my family won the green card lottery and we moved to New York in 1999 for better education and career opportunities.
I was raised by a single parent, my father. Being the oldest child, I always had many responsibilities to help my father and my siblings around the household. Seeing my father do his best to provide for the family has been a driving force behind my ambition and will to succeed. I also want to do well for my family since I am a role model for my siblings.
I am currently a rising sophomore at Bronx Community College, majoring in Liberal Arts. I am a member of the college’s debate team and green living club. My goal is to transfer to a four-year college or university to further my studies. From a career standpoint, I am interested in international development, green real estate, and global cultural studies.
New York Needs You is a dream come true and an opportunity to better myself in incomparable ways. Through NYNY, I hope to meet with people in my desired industries and learn from professionals and Fellows in the program.
