Originally from Massapequa, Long Island, I moved to New York City in the fall of 2009. I presently work two full time jobs in order to pay for my education and living expenses. Although this is difficult, education is my means to escape an unhealthy upbringing, and knowledge enhances my life by developing my problem solving abilities. My childhood shaped who I am today. Losing my father to suicide at a young age forced me to be strong and self-sufficient. I subsequently resisted following my sister’s foot steps of substance abuse and self-hatred. Determined to not be held back by my dyslexia, I immersed myself in learning and found support from my community. In high school, I performed over 2,000 hours of public service and worked for countless non-profit organizations. While at Pace University, I extend my passion for community service on a daily basis.
Presently, I am working to create a non-profit organization that will provide assistance to college students who cannot afford the travel costs associated with volunteering. In the future I hope to utilize my education and law degree to influence volunteerism and change. I also wish to use my talents to demonstrate the importance of music and arts in children’s lives through programs that benefit those who live in unstable, unhealthy environments. Ultimately, through service, I want to protect the lives of other children from the pain I experienced.
Being an NYNY Fellow is an opportunity of a lifetime. It provides me with a supportive and professional family, along with a network of resources that I never imagined I would have. NYNY keeps me eager and excited to better myself and the community that surrounds me. This organization is more then a dream; it is the reality that will build the bridge to my aspirations and facilitate my success.
