Ama
I was named after my father's elder sister, Ama Aidoo. I was given this name because my culture believes the child emulates the character he or she is named after. My aunt was a hardworking and humble person who is a source of inspiration in my life. Koforidua, Ghana was my home for the first seven years of my life, until my mother traveled to the States and I had to move to another town called Cape Coast in the central region of Ghana. I stayed there for nine years and joined my mother in the United States in 2009 to further my education. In my years in Cape Coast, I realized life was what you make it, with the choices one makes.
I am currently enrolled at Baruch College, where I study Accounting. I chose this career path because of my passion for numbers. I have loved to study and work with numbers since the fourth grade. My teacher saw my excitement for the subject mathematics, and told me to keep it up. During high school in the States, it was less than pleasant as a new student from another country. I concentrated mostly on my academics and spent less time on extracurricular activities. Through this challenge, I discovered my strength of perseverance and the value of being a hard worker who does all she can do to achieve success. My long term dream is to become a successful accountant in any of the top four accounting firms. After a few years in the workforce, I intend to go back to school to get my Master's degree in Accounting. I view NYNY as a tool that will supplement my education to develop my career for the future.
